From Ancient Wisdom to Contemporary Innovation

Basketry is a wisdom that has long been part of Thai society. In the past, villagers wove baskets, containers, or fishing tools for daily use. But who would have thought that today, these woven items would become "trendy" products making good money for villagers?

Assistant Professor Phusadee Saiwong from Nan Community College, the person behind this project, excitedly explains, "In Nan, we have a wide variety of basketry from natural materials - bamboo, rattan, reed, and even the rare triangular grass. It's a shame that not many people know about this. We want to push these to be widely recognized and generate income for the community at the same time."

อาจารย์ผุสดี สายวงศ์ อาจารย์ประจำวิทยาลัยชุมชนน่าน ผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังโครงการนี้ เล่าให้ฟังด้วยความตื่นเต้นว่า "ที่น่านเรามีงานจักสานจากวัสดุธรรมชาติหลากหลายมาก ทั้งไม้ไผ่ หวาย กก แถมยังมีหญ้าสามเหลี่ยมที่หาได้ยากอีกต่างหาก แต่น่าเสียดายที่ยังไม่ค่อยมีใครรู้จัก เราจึงอยากผลักดันให้สิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นที่รู้จักในวงกว้าง และสร้างรายได้ให้กับชุมชนไปพร้อมๆ กัน"

Blending Past and Present

Nan Community College and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) have collaborated to elevate basketry into contemporary products that meet modern market needs through three key processes:

Study: The team collected historical data and local wisdom from village sages in 5 districts: Mueang, Phu Phiang, Tha Wang Pha, Pua, and Bo Kluea, to understand the roots and value of traditional basketry.
Preserve: The knowledge gained is passed on and practiced with the new generation to prevent ancient weaving techniques from being lost over time.
Create: Blending traditional techniques with modern design, developing patterns and product forms to meet current market demands.
From Classroom to Global Market

The uniqueness of this project lies in developing a "Creative Basketry" curriculum that allows interested individuals to learn and practice comprehensive basketry skills, from material selection and design to marketing.

"The response exceeded expectations!" Phusadee smiles. "Our first batch of 20 students could generate income from selling creative woven products like hats, ceremonial trays, and artificial flowers. Some even quit their regular jobs to pursue basketry full-time."

Besides the curriculum, Nan Community College has established a "Creative Basketry Handicraft Learning Center" within the college to serve as a knowledge hub, showcase

สืบสาน: นำความรู้ที่ได้มาถ่ายทอดและฝึกฝนให้กับคนรุ่นใหม่ เพื่อให้เทคนิคการจักสานแบบโบราณไม่สูญหายไปตามกาลเวลา
สร้างสรรค์: ผสมผสานเทคนิคดั้งเดิมกับการออกแบบสมัยใหม่ พัฒนาลวดลายและรูปแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ให้ตรงกับความต้องการของตลาดปัจจุบัน

ความพิเศษของโครงการนี้คือการพัฒนาหลักสูตร "จักสานเชิงสร้างสรรค์" ที่เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้สนใจทั่วไปได้เข้ามาเรียนรู้และฝึกฝนทักษะการจักสานแบบครบวงจร ตั้งแต่การเลือกวัสดุ การออกแบบ ไปจนถึงการทำการตลาด

"ผลตอบรับเกินคาด!" อาจารย์ผุสดีเล่าด้วยรอยยิ้ม "นักเรียนรุ่นแรกของเรา 20 คน สามารถสร้างรายได้จากการขายผลงานจักสานสุดครีเอทอย่างหมวก พานพุ่ม และดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์ บางคนถึงกับลาออกจากงานประจำมาทำจักสานเต็มตัวเลยนะคะ"

"เราอยากให้ที่นี่เป็นเหมือนบ้านหลังที่สองของคนที่รักงานจักสาน" อาจารย์ผุสดีกล่าว "ใครมีไอเดียอะไรใหม่ๆ ก็สามารถมาทดลองทำได้ที่นี่ เรามีผู้เชี่ยวชาญคอยให้คำแนะนำ มีวัสดุอุปกรณ์พร้อม แถมยังมีเพื่อนร่วมอุดมการณ์ให้แลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นกันด้วย"
