In a world spinning at the speed of technology, there are still small communities holding fast to their roots and traditional wisdom. Ban Sao Luang in Bo Suak sub-district, Mueang Nan district, Nan province, is one such place. Here, threads of the past are woven into the present through the skillful hands of a women's group preserving the art of textile weaving.

From Local Wisdom to Community Identity
The textiles of Ban Sao Luang are not mere fabrics; they are reflections of the community's way of life and history. Distinctive patterns and forms of “sin” or “phasin skirt” such as the “Lai Nam Lai” (flowing water pattern), “Sin Maan” (Phasin skirt that the gap between patterns are not equal. But there is a certain structure.) , and “Sin Pong” (Phasin skirt that the space between patterns are the same throughout its body.)

designs all tell local stories. But the most outstanding is the "Bo Suak pattern," inspired by designs found on 700-year-old pottery excavated from ancient kilns in the sub-district.

Wallapa Inpong, Vice President of the Ban Sao Luang Weaving Community Enterprise, explains, "Weaving knowledge has been passed down through generations, from grandmothers to mothers and children. Initially, we wove fabrics for household use, but with the community's vision, we formed a group in 1984 to generate additional income from this wisdom."

นางวัลลภา อินผ่อง รองประธานวิสาหกิจชุมชนกลุ่มทอผ้าบ้านซาวหลวง เล่าว่า "ความรู้เรื่องการทอผ้าถูกส่งต่อจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น จากย่ายาย สู่แม่ และลูกหลาน เดิมทีเราทอผ้าไว้ใช้ในครัวเรือน แต่ด้วยวิสัยทัศน์ของคนในชุมชน เราจึงรวมกลุ่มกันในปี 2527 เพื่อสร้างรายได้เสริมจากภูมิปัญญานี้"

Continuous Development
The success of Ban Sao Luang textiles group didn't happen overnight but resulted from continuous development and support from various sectors. The weaving group has blended traditional patterns with the community's new identity while diversifying products to meet modern market demands, from clothing and shawls to home decorations and souvenirs.

Support from government agencies and educational institutions has helped elevate the quality and standards of the products. The Nan Community Development Office has certified OTOP product standards, while the Nan Provincial Industrial Office has awarded the Community Product Standard (CPS). Additionally, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna Nan is collaborating on development using AI technology to design new fabric patterns and product forms. Chulalongkorn University has assisted in developing new weaving techniques and creating new patterns, while the Department of Sericulture has supported the development of silk thread usage and dyeing techniques.

Support from the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) led to the creation of the 'Nan Noe Chao' brand, uniting textile producers in Nan province. This effort strengthened the local products' appeal and recognition, culminating in the “PATA Gold Awards 2020 : Women Empowerment Initiative” category. This success underscores the development that not only preserves local wisdom but also builds sustainable community strength.
